How do you know when your baby is ill?
- blue, pale, blotchy, or ashen (grey) skin.
- your child is hard to wake up, or appears disoriented or confused.
- your child is crying constantly and you cannot console or distract them, or the cry does not sound like their normal cry.
- green vomit.
- your child has a febrile seizure (fit) for the first time.
When should I be concerned about my baby being sick?
If your baby is younger than 3 months old, contact the doctor for any fever. If your baby is 3 to 6 months old and has a temperature up to 102 F (38.9 C) and seems sick or has a temperature higher than 102 F (38.9 C), contact the doctor.
What do you do when your baby is unwell?
If your child is ill, you can try your local pharmacy first. They’ll tell you if your child needs to see a GP. If your child has signs of serious illness, contact your GP directly or take them straight to the A&E department of your local hospital. Most GP surgeries are very supportive towards parents of small children.
Is my baby in pain or just fussy?
Your child may eat less or become fussy or restless. Crying that can’t be comforted. Crying, grunting, or breath-holding. Facial expressions, such as a furrowed brow, a wrinkled forehead, closed eyes, or an angry appearance.
What does a lethargic newborn look like?
Lethargic or listless babies appear to have little or no energy. They are drowsy or sluggish. They may also sleep longer than usual. They may be hard to wake for feedings and even when awake, are not alert or attentive to sounds and visual cues.
Do poorly babies sleep more?
Like I mentioned above, sleep is vital for recovery during times of sickness. And it’s likely that your baby will sleep more than normal when they are sick. It’s okay to let them sleep a bit longer than they normally would.
Will a baby cry if they are too cold?
The temperature can make your baby cry. They may cry because they are too hot or too cold. If your baby is fussy because of the temperature, there are signs that you can look for. Signs of the baby being too hot are sweating, damp hair, heat rash, or clammy skin.
Why is my baby cold but sweating?
Cold sweats, or night sweats as they are often known, happen during the night and are fairly common. If your child has a cold, the flu or a sinus infection, they may have a fever. When a fever breaks and the illness is gone, the body’s temperature is still a few degrees too high.
Should I let sick baby sleep all day?
You’re best to let them sleep as much as they need to if your schedule allows. Also while kids are sick, they may wake up more frequently. This is usually due to discomfort from a congested head, tummy ache, etc.
