Ok so here are some fun facts about my life:
1. I have always wanted to learn how to make sushi.
2. My best friend of 20+ years is Japanese.
3. She has never taught me how to make sushi…but maybe that’s for the best because she is kinda questionable in the kitchen. Sorry Jill but I’m calling you out on this one.
The other day I FINALLY had a neighbour teach me how to make sushi…this neighbour was NOT Jill and she is not Japanese, however we did end up creating a somewhat sushi looking like food and had a blast doing it (thanks Jodi).
Disclaimer: I’ve only made sushi once, therefore in my eyes I am now at expert sushi skill level, but if you really want to learn how to make it…you should probably google sushi and find different instructions. However, this is the way that I make it:
Step 1- Find someone who knows how to make sushi, go to their house, mix a drink (unless your pregnant, then have water) and let them walk you through it step by step….this is about the time where I got lost and my neighbour took over. But here is some proof that I did make sushi.
Ok so you’ve probably figured out by now that I’m not going to teach you how to make sushi. Besides, I feel my lack of knowledge on the subject would shame an entire country. Instead, here is how to make candy sushi!
- Fruit rolls ups
- Fruit by the foot
- Rice crispy treats
- Swedish fish
- Gummy bears or liquorice
Makizushi (yes that is the name of real sushi) Candy Rolls
Step 1- Buy your candy, and try not to eat it all on the way home.
Step 2-Lay your fruit roll up across your sushi mat (if you don’t have a mat you can use some plastic wrap to roll your treat.
Step 3- Spread your rice crispy treat across the fruit roll up, this acts as the ‘rice’ of your sushi. I used the pre-made treats because I find they stay soft and easier to manipulate than if you were to make the marshmallowy goodness from scratch.
Step 4-Add your liquorice or gummy bears in a straight line across your rice crispy. I used gummy bears because it was the only candy I had in the house, but don’t let me stifle your creativity with what kind of treats you fill in there.
Step 5-Roll up your fruit roll up so that it looks like a colourful log. Cut your log into medallions and voila you now have your own beautiful sushi treat.
Nigiri (also a real name) Candy Sushi
Step 1-Cut your rice crispy treats into thirds. Pinch the ends so that there are no sharp edges, and so that it looks more like a rounded out rectangle.
Step 2-Add your swedish fish to the top
Step 3- Take a fruit by the foot and fold it in half so that it is skinnier, then wrap it around your piece of sushi. Tada!
