As we get closer to Halloween I thought the perfect person for this weeks Friday Feature would be a party planner. Today we are talking to Shayla Clay of Shayla Clay Designs, a one stop shop for all of your party needs.
Before designing parties Shayla was an elementary school teacher who loved planning mini parties for the milestones of the kids in her class. She went from planning parties for the class, to the grade levels, and eventually started planning for the entire school. In 2007 her passion for creating celebrations became a business, and Shayla Clay Designs was created.
Kicking off the interview in holiday spirit, what I first want to know is what people should keep in mind when throwing a Halloween party?
To me the essentials for pulling off a festive Halloween party are making sure you have a color scheme in mind, so everything looks well put together. Try to use the same colors throughout your party whether it is the color of the balloons, straws, or sweets, making it aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
Secondly, I would suggest making some ‘spooky’ DIY treats a day in advance. That way on party day you don’t have to worry about it, and you can focus on other details to make sure your day goes just as planned.
Lastly, make sure you keep a budget in mind when styling for an event, while at the same time making sure it looks great!
What should all parties have to be a success?
To have a successful party there should be great food and entertainment that both the guest of honor and their friends will enjoy. It is also important to have elements that are true to the guest of honor, being that everyone is there to celebrate them.
If you were planning your own party what would be the theme, and what pieces of yours would you include?
If I were planning my own party, I would probably have a world-class wine party, showcasing both regional and international bottles, with snacks from their respective countries. I would have elements of gold throughout the space (because I’m absolutely obsessing over it right now), so I would incorporate my gold side table, floor candle pillars, picture frames, and vases.
What advice do you have for young entrepreneurs looking to start their own business?
Be true to yourself, and know that it’s okay to re-brand, change the layout of your website, or do whatever it is you want to do. When I first began, I felt like I was all over the place, because I was (and some days it still feels like I am). But I am continuously setting goals for myself, putting action behind those goals and stepping forward. If you have an inkling about something, do it. The worst that could happen is someone saying “no.” But, if they say yes, now you’re cooking. –
