This Friday I’d like to take a walk down memory lane, back to white dresses and wedding bells. I remember the excitement of planning the big day, finding a venue and trying on dresses. I loved picking out the perfect accessories but there were too many times I would have to put the sparkly treasures back after a look at the price tags.
I think we’ve all been there, caught between what we want vs. what we can afford. Samantha Stark, owner of BlancaVeils had the same problem back in 2012 when she was planning her own wedding. The dream of a long lace wedding veil was out of reach because good quality meant high price tags. Wanting to fill this market gap, BlancaVeils was created.
How long have you been creating custom wedding pieces and what inspired you to get into this industry?
I started hand crafting wedding veils and accessories just over 2 years ago. My husband and I decided to make a life change, we quit our jobs and moved back to my hometown. Knowing I had to find a creative niche in order to pay the bills, I remembered the need for affordable bridal veils. With the help of my creative sister, we started BlancaVeils. I’m now convinced this is my calling!
The company has exploded over the last 18 months and I now have 25 employees. I still cant believe it. The work has been exhausting, with long days and nights, but its finally starting to pay off.
What inspires your creativity?
My brides. They will come up with the most amazing ideas and simply search for someone to make it for them. When they find me, it’s like a creative bomb… Its so much fun.
I also get inspired by different publications and bridal magazines. I see a look, and immediately strive to recreate it at an affordable price for my brides.
How would you describe your style?
Im all over the place with my style. I’m personally more classic and traditional, but my designs seem to find the beauty in all things lace and tulle. Sometimes the more nontraditional a veil is the more I love it.
What advice do you have for young entrepreneurs looking to start their own business?
Absolutely go for it! All in, 110%, because you will need it. You have to be willing to grow and learn new things. Focus on small goals (a photo shoot, new product development, learning a new selling platform, etc…) , accomplish it, and then create another. If not, you will be all over the place and easily be overwhelmed with your never ending “to do” list.
Find an amazing support of wonderful people that will work with you and truly want you to succeed. I was lucky enough to have my wonderful family from the start (free labour). Then we got so busy that I started employing them and they actually quit their jobs to work for my company full time. Now I’ve even started hiring outside the family and have a group of the most AMAZING employees. If you want your business to thrive, you are going to need help. Letting go of some of the production has been my biggest struggle, but if you train them right your company will flourish.
Lastly, and one that I struggle with the most; learn to slow down and appreciate what you have accomplished.
At the end of the day what makes you smile?
Seeing my brides’ photos and knowing that I have forever made a special memory in their lives. Their bridal portraits, their walk down the aisle, lifting the veil.. those memories are not replaceable. Knowing their gorgeous veil was completely hand crafted in my small Texas town makes me smile. I also love to read their sweet reviews, it makes me know I am heading in the right direction. –
